And I was struck, as I have been many times in the past, by the thought of what the sun really is. It is literally a violent and sometimes unpredictable hydrogen and helium fireball, for which life as we know it is entirely dependent.

Indeed, dislike is a necessary survival mechanism that humans have been using to get by for centuries, way before the jungle of social media took over. In order to understand what happens in your body when you dislike someone, you can start by trying to understand fear. Our negative feelings toward someone get stronger as bad experiences with them pile up, and these negative thoughts trigger the fight-or-flight response in our bodies. This heightened arousal of our fearful instincts causes us to dread future interactions with people we dislike. In turn, this conditions us into even further dislike of that person, which just validates our negative feelings.

We all remember things a bit differently to each other. However, in more severe circumstances, people toy with someone else's memories to make them feel like they are going crazy. It's called gaslighting. Gaslighting is not when somebody has a different opinion to you. For example, you can't accuse someone of it just because they vote for an opposing political party. It's a severe manipulative tool people with dark triad personality traits use — but not exclusively — and it is seen a lot in abusive relationships.
