Skip to main content Mandarin Chinese English Dictionary. I'm a visual learner and this book is perfect for my studies. I looked into this book because I have the German version and it helped me a lot.
It included a photograph of the object, along with the chinese character and pinyin. This allows you to visually see what words you are studying. See All Buying Options. In Stock. I just bought from Amazon this fantastic visual dictionary - despite of not looking into it - but I can say I was not disappointed: it is a DK!
Intelligent and pretty. With incredible photos fine printed. An advice: It is in simplified characters. For my studies, that are in traditional characters it is not a real problem, for the pronunciation pinyin is the same, so, for each issue I look, I write side-by-side the simplified form, the traditional character. It is a way of memorize both! What one should know is that, besides the numerous chapters, like, people, appearence, health, home, services, shopping, food, eating out, study, work, transport, sports, leisure, environment, reference and all, there are two complete indexes in chinese and in english , at the end of the book.
Both in alphabetical order. Easy to search. Add to cart. It may be called a paper back, but it's heavy duty. I also like that it's not organized by tones, so it has more words than another book the same size.
It's approved by my Chinese friend. Colby Orlando, FL. It is handy, but the vocabulary is small since it's a thinner book and doesn't always have the words my students are trying to look up. Whenever I need a word s translated, I switch either from chinese-english or english-chinese. It helped me a lot understand simply the meaning of chinese characters. Besides, the dictionary is light weight and can be easiiy carried around. Currently I am at level 2 and find the dictionary more useful.
I highly recommend this dictionary to all chinese language students. I have only used this Chinese dictionary and a software Chinese dictionary and this is my favorite. The cover is a plastic covered softcover of somekind. The center of the dictionary contains a list of radicles and characters to make finding words extreamly easy.
The simplified characters are given, but also if the traditional character differs it is given in parenthesis.
When I first purchased this dictionary I was amazed at how many words it contains. The characters in my opinion are easy to see and the papper is very white. The readings are in pinyin and they are Mandarin readings. This is a great and well made dictionary, in my opinion. Only 18 left in stock - order soon. I bought this as a gift for my friend who is studying abroad in China next semester. She has been using it as a part of her Mandarin studies and has found it to be very helpful.
The only issue is its size. I was expecting it to be a little bit bigger, and not so small you almost need a magnifying glass to read the words. However, I can rest assured knowing the book will not be lost as it is truly pocket-sized. Overall, I was satisfied with my purchase and so is my friend. Oxford Chinese Dictionary. Only 8 left in stock - order soon. This is a hugely significant work.
It's much more fresh than the body of aging comprehensive dictionaries so on the basis of the dictionary itself I'd have no qualms giving it five stars on the basis of the content.
If you have need of a large authoritative paper dictionary then this is a fairly epic effort. One curious feature is the supplementary content which is dotted through the huge tomb on a variety of subjects, most of which I think you could call elementary in level.
This strikes me as a bit of a miss match between in audience given that only head words on the Chinese to English side are given in pinyin. Unlikely to bother the intermediate student perhaps but the lack of pinyin for corresponding Chinese words in English to Chinese could be quite frustrating at times for anyone. Of course the solution is to view it electronically As an educator, who has been teaching foreigners to learn Mandarin Chinese language for 18 years, I would say it is very difficult to learn a foreign language since we learners are not in an immersion learning environment.
During the instruction, I have been guiding students to use English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries online and on a hard copy format. This dictionary also lists all Pinyin syllable Chinese phonetic alphabets This handy little journal has everything a traveler without experience in the language would need to get around a Chinese-speaking country. The helpful "you might hear" sections are really nice, and pronunciation can be taught through the app that comes with the book.
I recommend this to anyone looking to familiarize themselves with language basics on a budget. Available for download now. I found the traditional way of going through a course book, making exercises, listening to the CD, writing the characters with the right stroke order, etc.
People think you speak good chinese, when all you do is repeat the sentence from the Pimsleur CDs! So I decided to take one step back, and go for the combination of pointing and single-word "sentences". And try to pick up some words in the answer. Figured that vocab is much more important than grammar in Chinese at my level at least. Anyway, it's working.
That's why I write this review, my first one. If it works for me, maybe for some others too. Mind that I did not use this book as a dictionary, it is probably to basic for that. But it makes an excellent wordlist. Only 3 left in stock more on the way.
I've just received a copy of this wonderful dictionary - the Tuttle Chinese English Dictionary by Li Dong, and I can hardly recommend a better dictionary than this one to learn both Chinese and English.
What I noticed right away were the ample example sentences in Chinese with pinyin and English - really practical sentences with smooth and accurate translations. It is a really a gift to be able to find such good sentences and translate them so perfectly. The short introduction to Chinese and the appendices are alone worth the money, but the organization of the material using blue ink for the Chinese headwords, bold type for the Chinese pinyin and italics for the English translations make this dictionary a great study resource easy on the eyes.
I heartily recommend this dictionary to anyone desiring to learn either language. There's a chinese to english side and a english to chinese side. Reads like a concise dictionary. Quickly gives you basic translation of a word to a character and vice versa.
English to chinese side has the pinyin. Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary. Only 1 left in stock - order soon. The Tuttle is better for Chinese-English in that it contains more entries and examples. The Oxford is better for English-Chinese. One very nice feature is that the measure words are included with the nouns. Use both dictionaries together for the most helpful learning experience, but keep in mind the dictionaries are geared towards students and will not be overly comprehensive.
