But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

How do we respond to a Protestant that uses the above verse to then claim that authority is needed for proper interpretation, doctrine, etc.? First thing is that this verse has nothing to do with anything that relates to who has authority to interpret the bible. Again, they fail to take the entire book into account. This whole book is about the inner struggles of the early church and the particular verse listed above is exactly the same. The author is telling the readers most likely the community that he was from , most likely previously taught directly by Jesus, that what he taught is within them and always will be. This letter addresses this problem, not who had authority to interpret the bible.

But the anointing which ye have received - That ointment, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, mentioned 1 John ; note. Ye need not that any man teach you - The Gnostics, who pretended to the highest illumination, could bring no proof that they were divinely taught, nor had they any thing in their teaching worthy the acceptance of the meanest Christian; therefore they had no need of that, nor of any other teaching but that which the same anointing teacheth, the same Spirit from whom they had already received the light of the glory of God, in the face of Jesus Christ. Whatever that taught, they needed; and whatever those taught whose teaching was according to this Spirit, they needed.
